  • Right across infrastructure, there’s a requirement to not only maintain, but also renew and reimagine. Whatever stage you’re at in your career, with us you’ll have an opportunity to grow and develop. Delivering essential infrastructure services for life, while being safety first, and client and customer centric in a friendly, fun and respectful environment where you are encouraged to thrive.

    Where will you be working?

At M Group Energy, we’re enabling the energy essential to support our lives.

We provide an end-to-end service, delivering solutions in electricity transmission, distribution, renewable energy, EV, metering and home decarbonisation.

This role will be within our Transmission & Renewables team. We design, build and commission substations at voltages up to and including 400kV. Our teams construct and maintain transmission lines and substations, ensuring the efficient and reliable delivery of electricity.

    What will you be doing:

Are you an experienced Protection and Control engineer who wants to own the full P&C design on the projects connecting the UK's renewable energy to the grid? This a Hybrid and flexible role, with site days expected and occasional meetings at our offices in Birmingham, Nottingham or Newport.

Join our Renewable Connections Design Team as a Senior P&C Engineer. You'll lead the protection, control and secondary systems design for substations up to 400kV connecting solar and BESS schemes to the networks of SSE, UKPN, SPEN and independent DNOs. You'll take designs from concept to construction-ready, approve the work of others and support commissioning through to energisation.

    • Own the full P&C design process for substations up to 400kV and generation/BESS connections, from scoping and concept through to issued-for-construction
    • Specify protection relays, control and relay panels, CTs, VTs, intertripping, metering and DC systems (batteries and chargers)
    • Carry out CT/VT sizing calculations and protection grading and coordination studies, and produce relay settings and configuration files
    • Design interface protection (including loss of mains), intertrip and operational tripping schemes, and agree them with the DNO/IDNO
    • Design to ENA Technical Specifications and Engineering Recommendations and network operator protection policies (e.g. SSEN, UKPN and SPEN), as well as British and IEC standards
    • Review and approve third-party and subcontractor P&C designs, acting as the P&C design approver on your projects
    • Prepare test specifications, review commissioning plans, attend commissioning panel meetings and support site teams through to energisation and as-built records
    • Work closely with primary (HV plant), civils, cables and project management colleagues, and support bids with design input and pricing
    • Plan P&C design resources, track delivery against programme and budget, and mentor graduate and junior engineers

     What you’ll bring

    •  Degree in Electrical Engineering (or similar), or HNC/HND with substantial relevant experience
    •  At least 6 years P&C design experience, including at least 4 years on UK distribution or transmission network projects
    • Strong knowledge of UK protection practice, ENA standards and DNO/IDNO protection requirements
    • Hands-on experience with protection relays (e.g. Siemens, GE, SEL, Schneider, ABB), CT/VT sizing and AC/DC schematic design
    • Experience of protection modelling and grading software such as ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory or IPS
    • Understanding of SCADA and communication protocols (IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus)
    • Sound understanding of CDM 2015, a strong safety mindset and high attention to detail
    • Able to juggle multiple projects and work well in a multi-disciplinary team
    • Full UK driving licence
